A family house that never quite stopped being one
We opened six rooms to guests in 2009. The veranda, the kitchen table and the dog are all still exactly where they were.
Our story
Built on sand, slowly
Goviyapana is the quiet end of Ahangama — a bend of sand between the coast road and the reef, where fishermen still pull nets in at dawn and the loudest thing at night is the swell.
Nimal grew up in this house. After years working in hotels in Galle he came home, added six rooms around the garden, and asked his sister Kumari to run the kitchen. That was the whole business plan.
Today we host surfers, families and the occasional writer who books three nights and stays three weeks. We keep the house small on purpose: six rooms means we still know everyone's name by the second morning.
How we do things
Early is better
Breakfast starts at 5:30 for anyone chasing glassy water. Nobody here will tell you to come back later.
One kitchen, no buffet
Kumari cooks what the market had that morning. Seven curries at dinner, hoppers on Sundays.
Light on the coast
Solar hot water, refill stations instead of plastic bottles, and a beach clean every second Saturday.
Local, all the way down
Every guide, driver and coach we book you with lives within ten kilometres of the house.
